What Can Be Done to Improve the Quality of Water After It Has Become Polluted

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency monitors environmental quality, offers technical and fiscal assistance, and enforces environmental regulations. The agency finds and cleans up spills or leaks that tin can bear on our health and environment. Staff develop statewide policy, and support ecology instruction.

As a regulatory bureau, the MPCA'due south job is to limit pollution caused by businesses, organizations, and individuals in order to protect homo health and the environment. Notwithstanding, we are also focused on pollution prevention as the about cost-constructive method of environmental protection.

The MPCA completed its commencement 10-year monitoring cycle for the state's lxxx watersheds in 2022 and is working on the next wheel. The agency's watershed approach in the second bike involves intensively monitoring a reduced set of stream and lake water weather in each watershed to track progress, and adding sites needed by local water managers.  Monitoring:

  • Determines the overall health of the watershed's water resources
  • Identifies impaired waters and those that demand protection to prevent impairments
  • Shows changes and trends in bodies of water over fourth dimension
  • Measure out progress toward water quality goals
  • Provides data for removing waters from the impaired waters list

Follow-up monitoring determines the cause(southward) of impairments, and so restoration and protection strategies are called for the watershed. Partnering agencies and watershed stakeholders — such equally counties, watershed organizations, soil and water conservation districts, and citizens — utilize all of this information to develop local h2o plans and make improvements to accomplish water quality goals.

Minnesota's Clean Water Fund goals

In conjunction with 6 other state agencies, the MPCA worked to place the outcomes we expect to achieve over the 25-year life of the Clean Water Fund. The fund was established by the 2008 Clean Water, Land and Legacy Subpoena and is enabling many projects to amend h2o quality.  Progress toward meeting the identified outcomes is described in the latest Clean Water Fund Performance Study.

MPCA staff work to educate the public, local governments, businesses, and other organizations on a diverseness of pollution prevention problems, such as:

  • Collaborating on the We Are Water projection with the Minnesota Humanities Center and other country and local organizations
  • Working with public works departments to limit road salt use, to forestall chloride from getting into h2o
  • Helping businesses reduce their use of hazardous chemicals
  • Promoting agricultural state apply practices that protect rivers and streams
  • Advising homeowners with fuel tanks on preventing dangerous spills

Click on the "Living Greenish" tab on the MPCA homepage to notice many ways you can help protect h2o quality.

Permitting

Permits are another tool the MPCA uses to protect the environment. Permits limit the pollution emitted by some businesses and industries. A let is a regulatory tool that sets specific goals for specific activities — they set goals for the prevention, control, or cleanup of pollution; limit releases of pollutants; direct structure or operation of a facility; and control storage, collecting, transporting, and processing of waste product. The MPCA's water monitoring data is critical to providing reasonable and accurate permits.
